Sunday lockdown continues in Kerala amid COVID-19

Kerala will continue its night curfew and Sunday lockdowns due to an increase in Covid-19 cases. Only essential services were permitted throughout the state, with police strictly enforcing the lockdown regulations. In a news conference after a meeting to discuss the state's COVID-19 scenario on September 4, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan announced that the state's night curfew and Sunday lockdowns will be maintained.

Kerala recorded 29,682 new COVID-19 cases, 25,910 recoveries, and 142 fatalities on Saturday, according to the Chief Minister. The number of active cases in the state stood at 2,50,065 while the death toll logged was 21,422. The test positivity rate was recorded at 17.54 percent.

Vijayan also stated that the increase of COVID-19 cases following Onam was not as big as expected. Vijayan added that while there is a severe shortage of vaccine doses in some areas in Kerala, the state is expected to get 9,97,570 doses on Sunday, as notified by the Centre.

Vijayan said, "We are facing a severe shortage of vaccine doses in some places in the state. The Centre has informed us that we will receive 9,97,570 doses of vaccine on Sunday."The Kerala Chief Minister stated that with COVID-19 vaccination "progressing at a great pace", the state government is hoping to achieve herd immunity soon.
