Charismatic striker Sunil Chhetri on Friday again hinted that he was nearing retirement and said that if India is banned from FIFA after the Supreme Court removed Praful Patel from the post of AIFF president, it would be detrimental as he is about to play his last match. For some time now, there has been speculation about the retirement of 37-year-old  Chhetri and he has said on several occasions that his illustrious career is going to end soon.

Chhetri, amidst a media interaction ahead of the final round of the Asian Cup qualifiers starting June 8, said, "Even if what is happening in this case, I hope it remains in control and sanctions have not been imposed on the country so far.'' Because it will be very damaging and it will not only happen to the entire country but also to me because I am 37 years old and playing my last matches. I don't know when your last match will be.

Continuing with his point, he said, "Yes, when the news came, I was scared because it has started affecting you. But then you are getting full information, then you realize that it is not even so worrisome and things are going to be fine.'' The Supreme Court on May 18 removed Patel from the post of All India Football Federation (AIFF) president after he extended his term. His third term in the AIFF was to end in December 2020 but he continued to hold the post awaiting an order on a Supreme Court case that has been pending since 2017.
