Gavaskar, popularly known as Sunny, was born on this day in 1949, losing at birth. Gavaskar recalls the days in his autobiography, 'Sunny Days', saying, "I probably never become a cricketer and this book never comes before you. If one of my relatives, Narayan Masoorkar, would not have come into my life on the day of my birth."

Sunil further writes, "It seems that Nan-Kaka (as I used to call him), who came to see me in the hospital on the day of my birth, saw a hole near my left ear.' He was told how his nan-kaka had saved him from having an exchange with a fisherman's child. 'The next day he came to the hospital again and adopted the baby in my mother's cradle. They were afraid that the child had no holes near my ear. Later, I was found in all the cradles of the hospital and was finally found sleeping near a fisherman.
