Doha: India's football captain Sunil Chhetri has broken the record of Argentina's star footballer Lionel Messi. Chhetri achieved another major feat when he overtook Messi on Monday to become the second most active player to score the international goal. Chhetri scored two goals against Bangladesh in the ongoing FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 qualifiers at the Jasim bin Hamad Stadium of Al Saad Club in Doha to give the team a 2-0 victory.

Chhetri, 36, scored both his goals in the second half of the match to give India a thrilling victory. "I don't count goals," Chhetri said after the match in a video posted by the Indian football team. Chhetri has scored a total of 74 goals in his international career, two more than Messi. He is behind Portugal star Cristiano Ronaldo (103) in the list of most international goalscorers. Ali Mabkhaut is third after scoring 73 goals.

Chhetri added, "It was tough, sometimes frustrating. We missed many opportunities, a lot could have been done better, but in the end we are happy that we got three points which we needed. We probably should have done a lot better. Winning the entire three points anyway and the game is always sweet. I am really happy that we also kept a clean sheet".
