Super Typhoon Yagi, the most powerful storm in Asia this year, is heading towards northern Vietnam after causing significant damage in China's Hainan province. On Saturday, it was reported that two people have died in Hainan due to the typhoon's impact.

The storm, which made landfall in Hainan on Friday, brought severe winds, heavy rain, and lightning. The powerful gusts, reaching up to 234 kph (145 mph), resulted in widespread destruction, including downed trees and flooded roads. Over 800,000 homes experienced power outages as the typhoon struck.

The island, home to more than 10 million residents, remains largely paralyzed as emergency crews begin clearing debris, uprooted trees, and overturned vehicles. In addition to the two fatalities, at least 92 people have been injured.

Yagi originated over the sea east of the Philippine archipelago on September 1. It strengthened into a tropical storm and hit Luzon, the most populous island in the Philippines, causing at least 16 deaths and injuring 13 people.

The typhoon intensified rapidly, surpassing the Category 5 Atlantic hurricane Beryl to become the most powerful tropical cyclone of 2024 and the strongest storm in the Pacific this year.

As of early Saturday, Yagi was advancing towards northern Vietnam over the Gulf of Tonkin. Although its wind speeds had slightly decreased earlier in the day, they have picked up again, reaching Category 4 strength at 216 kph (134 mph), according to meteorological reports.
