Collegium rejects government's appeal to appointment of judges in Karnataka High Court

New Delhi: The Supreme Court, taking a major decision, has rejected the central government's objection to the promotion of four lawyers. The collegium has again sent a recommendation for appointment of these four names as judges of the Karnataka High Court. Quoting the report of the Intelligence Bureau (IB), the country's Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi, who is presiding over the collegium, said in his report that the personal and business image of these people is very good. Also, nothing has been seen against these four lawyers.

The names of the four lawyers recommended are Savannur Vishwajit Shetty, Maralur Inderkumar Arun, Muhammad Gaus Shukure Kamal and Anglaguppe Sitaramaiya Indresh. The name of Savanur Vishwajit Shetty was sent by the Justice Department to the Collegium for reconsideration. A complaint has been filed against him. It states that they are related to the underworld and landmines. This gang works as extortion money. The Collegium said the allegations related to the complaint could not be confirmed.

He said that "all the consulting judges have found him suitable for selection". Apart from Chief Justice Gogoi, the Collegium also consists of Justices SA Bobde and NV Ramanna. The Department of Justice sent Arun's name back to the Collegium, saying that a complaint was registered against him. His professional career has not been clean and transparent. He has been involved in many corrupt practices. Similarly, the name of Kamal was also returned by the Justice Department to the Collegium for consideration. The case of another judge Akil Qureshi is also stuck.
