New Delhi: The Central government, which has been facing constant criticism over the vaccination policy, has defended itself in the Supreme court. In an affidavit filed in the Supreme Court on Sunday night, the Central Government said that there is no need for judicial intervention in the matter. The Supreme court will hear the matter today.

The Central Government in its affidavit has also clarified that the approval for vaccination of people between the ages of 18 and 44 has been given only because many states were demanding it and the Central Government has asked vaccine suppliers to supply vaccine to states at a price Rs 150 per dose, while the vaccine manufacturing companies are taking Rs.300 and Rs.400 per dose from the States. However, the Central Government has said that it has to pay less for the vaccine because it has ordered a large scale vaccine.

In its affidavit, the Central Government has said, "It is important to note that the Central Government has placed major vaccine orders for its comprehensive vaccination drive. Orders are much larger than state governments and private hospitals. Therefore, the impact has also been shown on the price". According to the affidavit, different prices will lead to a competitive market for private vaccine manufacturers, resulting in increased vaccine production and not higher prices. This will also encourage foreign vaccine manufacturers to manufacture vaccines in the country. However, the Centre also said that the price difference will not affect the public as all states have announced that they will provide free vaccines.
