New Delhi: The Supreme Court has approved the ongoing process of breaking the INS Viraat. On the petition filed to stop it, the Supreme court said that it was filed too late. The court said, "The petitioners came to the Supreme court very late. 40% of the ship has already been broken. We will not interfere in its breaking process'.'

The petitioner argued that only 40 percent has been broken. It can be repaired and converted into a museum. If it is broken then it will be a big loss for the country. Chief Justice SA Bobde, who is hearing the case on this, said, "Somebody has paid the price for this ship". As far as the feeling of patriotism is concerned, we are with you. But you are quite late. "Let us know that in an auction conducted by MSTC Limited, this ship was bought by Shriram Green Ship Recycling Industries Ltd. of Gujarat for Rs. 38.50 crores. Formerly known as 'HMS Hermes', it served the British Navy from November 1959 to April 1984.

In 1974, Prince Charles, the heir to the British throne, flew 845 Naval Air Squadrons aboard the 'HMS Hermes'. It was later inducted into the Indian Navy as its second aircraft carrier, 'INS Viraat' in May 1987 after extensive renovation and augmenting its combat capabilities
