New Delhi: Former PM Rajiv Gandhi's murderer AG Perarivalan has been granted bail. The Supreme Court on Tuesday granted the bail of AG Perarivalan. In fact, Perarivalan's lawyer had complained to the court that his client was currently on parole. However, even after being on parole, he is neither allowed to leave the house nor meet anyone. The supreme court was considering whether it should grant bail to Perarivalan as the Tamil Nadu governor is yet to decide on his plea to release the convict from jail.

At the same time, the central government had opposed Perarivalan's plea, saying that the President is the appropriate authority to decide on the insistence of the former PM's assassin. Perarivalan, who was arrested at the age of 19 in the case, was sentenced to death in May 1999. He was accused of purchasing an 8-volt battery used to trigger a belt bomb that assassinated former PM Rajiv Gandhi.

However, in 2014, he and two other Murugan and Santhan (both Sri Lankans) were commuted to life imprisonment due to the long pendency of their mercy petitions.
