The Supreme Court of India is set to host a special screening of the Hindi film Laapataa Ladies on August 9, 2024, as part of its 75th-anniversary celebrations. The event, held at the court's administrative building complex, is designed for judges, their spouses, and members of the registry.
Bollywood star Aamir Khan and director Kiran Rao, the producers of the film, will be in attendance. The movie, which addresses gender equality, will be shown from 4:15 PM to 6:20 PM.
A circular from the Supreme Court highlights the event: “To mark the seventy-fifth year of the Supreme Court’s establishment, we are pleased to present the movie Laapataa Ladies on August 9, 2024, in the Auditorium, C-Block, Administrative Building Complex. Director Kiran Rao and producer Aamir Khan will be present at the screening.”
Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud shared with Bar and Bench that the screening of Laapataa Ladies is part of an effort to raise awareness among the Supreme Court staff. “This initiative is aimed at increasing sensitivity within the Supreme Court, which is why we are organizing this screening. There are many activities at the Supreme Court that often go unnoticed, such as our 24/7 Ayurvedic clinic for staff treatment and relaxation. This screening is also an opportunity for staff members to connect,” the CJI explained.
Laapataa Ladies features Nitashi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, and Sparsh Shrivastava in leading roles, with Ravi Kishan, Chhaya Kadam, and Geeta Aggarwal Sharma in prominent supporting roles. The film has been well-received both in theaters and on Netflix, where it secured a top spot following its digital release.
This event reflects the Supreme Court's dedication to addressing significant social issues like gender equality while commemorating its landmark anniversary.
