New Delhi: The Supreme Court has sent a notice to the Central Government on the petition for the early release or repatriation of Captain Sanjit Bhattacharjee, imprisoned for the last nearly 24 years in a Pakistani jail. The notice has been sent by the apex court to the Center on the petition of the 81-year-old mother of Captain Sanjeet. In fact, the petition has demanded that the government intervene in the matter on humanitarian grounds and try for Sanjit's release soon through diplomatic means.

The matter was heard by a bench of Chief Justice SA Bobde, Justice AS Bopanna, and Justice V Ramasubramanian on Friday in the Supreme Court. The court, while sending a notice to the Center in this case, also asked the counsel for the petitioner whether he could give a complete list of the other soldiers imprisoned in Pakistan's jail in this way. The petition in the court said that Captain Sanjit Bhattacharjee has been imprisoned in a Pakistani jail for the past 23 years and 9 months. No one is aware of which jail they are in Pakistan.

The whole incident of Captain Sanjit reaching Pakistan jail is related to April 19 and 20, 1997. According to the petition, Captain Sanjit along with his other fellow members went to patrol along the outskirts of Kutch and Pakistan in Gujarat on the night of April 19, 1997. The next day, on April 20, only 15 members of the squad returned. Captain Sanjit and another member of the squad, Lance Naik Ram Bahadur Thapa, were not with them. Both have been missing since then.
