New Delhi: The Supreme Court has sent a notice to the West Bengal government on a petition challenging the constitution of a commission of inquiry headed by former apex court judge Madan Lokur to probe the Pegasus dispute. A three-member bench headed by CJI NV Ramana issued a notice to the West Bengal government led by CM Mamata Banerjee seeking its response. The setting up of a commission of inquiry was recently challenged by the West Bengal government in the Supreme Court.

The petition said that when the apex court itself is hearing the case, why did the Mamata government constitute the commission? In fact, the Mamata government issued a notification on July 27, setting up a commission led by former apex court judge Madan B Lokur to probe the Pegasus espionage case. Two retired high court judges have also been included in the state government's inquiry committee. The committee will look into allegations of phone hacking, tracking, and phone recording in Bengal.

However, the Supreme Court has not stayed the Bengal government's commission's action in the matter at present. The next hearing in the case in the apex court will be held on August 25. In the court, NGO Global Village Foundation filed a petition saying that the case of military-grade spyware pegasus requires a national investigation into the alleged hacking of phones by technical experts. The apex court is also hearing petitions seeking an inquiry SIT into the espionage case. He requires a serious investigation into the Pegasus case. It cannot be investigated separately.
