New Delhi: Justice MR Shah of the Supreme Court has retired on Monday. In the farewell ceremony, Chief Justice (CJI) DY Chandrachud has given him the noun of 'Tiger Shah'. Now talking to the media, Justice MR Shah told how he came to be called 'Tiger Shah'. Along with this, he also answered with impunity on the question of praising PM Narendra Modi in 2018. He said that he has no regrets about it.

Justice Shah said that the name 'Tiger Shah' was given to him by CJI Chandrachud. Behind the name Tiger is hidden the love and affection of CJI Chandrachud. He told that, CJI Chandrachud had given him this name when he had gone to a conference in Russia 2-3 years ago. Justice Shah said that we had gone to Russia for a conference. Then CJI had said that, any work will be given to Tiger, Tiger will do it. This is his love, affection and respect for me. When asked about the bench, Justice Shah said that I used to enjoy sitting with everyone because that is their nature.

Let us tell you that after praising PM Narendra Modi in 2018, retired Supreme Court Justice MR Shah has been targeted once for being pro-government. Justice Shah said that he still stands by his statement to praise the Prime Minister and he is not going to be bothered by some people's criticism. Let us tell you that Justice MR Shah had praised PM Modi in 2018 at a function organized to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of the Gujarat High Court and termed him as the most popular, beloved, vibrant and visionary leader. 

When questions were raised on Justice Shah regarding this statement, he said that my conscience is clear and my decisions have never been influenced by personal views. No one can give examples to show that (the statement) has affected my decision-making ability on the judicial side. Those who have nothing to do criticize the judges. When, he was asked if he regrets his statement, he said – where is the point of regret, what wrong have I said?

When Justice Shah was asked whether he had a working relationship with PM Modi during his tenure as a judge of the Gujarat High Court? On this he said that there is no question of working together in the judicial side. Shah said that, throughout his career as a justice, he did not have close relations with politicians. He has discharged his duty as a judge without any fear, favor or ill-will. Justice Shah said that, I have given many decisions against the government. When we give decisions, we do not consider who is in power. For us the interest of the country is first.
