New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Saturday directed the formation of a 12-member National Task Force to demand and distribute medical oxygen across the country. The Task Force will give its recommendations on the availability and proper distribution of oxygen across the country as well as essential medicines and medical facilities.

A bench headed by Justice DY Chandrachud of the apex court has constituted a 12-member National Task Force, including 10 doctors, cabinet secretary at the Centre, and home secretary of the health ministry, keeping in view the growing infection of corona epidemic as well as the need for increased medical facilities. The Cabinet Secretary of the Central Government has been appointed as the Convenor of the Task Force. The bench of the apex court included Justice DY Chandrachud and Justice MR Shah. The initial term of the Task Force will be 6 months.

The task force constituted by the apex court will examine the preparedness being made during the epidemic and submit its recommendations on the demand, availability, and supply of medicines and medical facilities as per the possibility of any future emergency. However, the court said that unless the task force gives its recommendations on oxygen distribution, the Central Government will continue to distribute oxygen across the country as per the existing system. The Supreme Court has also approved the oxygen audit of Delhi.
