New Delhi: The Central government, while filing an affidavit in the Supreme Court, has sought more time for the states where they are less in number on a petition seeking minority status for Hindus. The affidavit, filed by the Center in the Supreme Court on August 29, states that the government has already served the state governments of Nagaland, Punjab, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh as well as the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. Ladakh's Ministry of Home Affairs, Department of Legal Affairs, Ministry of Law and Justice, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education, National Commission for Minorities and National Commission for Minority Educational Institutions.

According to the affidavit, the said stakeholders have requested for some time for a comprehensive consultation with other stakeholders before they form a considered opinion in the matter due to the far-reaching implications of the issues involved. The affidavit further stated that the state governments of Punjab, Mizoram, Meghalaya and Ladakh have already submitted their comments and views on the issue. At the same time, there is no response from the state government of Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.

The central government in its affidavit has also said that the response from the states of Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh is awaited. According to the affidavit, a reminder was sent to the states, urging them to give their feedback. The ministry has also proposed to hold meetings with other states in the coming weeks to share their views. That's why he asked for more time. In the last hearing on this matter, the Supreme Court had expressed disappointment over the change in the stand of the Central Government.
