SC pronounces landmark verdict on Pegasus case, Modi govt to suffer setback

New Delhi: The apex court has passed a landmark order in the Pegasus espionage case. The Supreme Court order said the Pegasus espionage case will be investigated by the expert committee. State that the petitions filed in the court sought an independent inquiry. A bench of Chief Justice (CJI) NV Ramana, Justice Surya Kant and Justice Hima Kohli ruled on the same. The court said that the irrational espionage of people is not acceptable at all.

The Supreme Court has now constituted a committee headed by retired Justice RV Ravindran. Justiceravindran will be joined by Alok Joshi and Sandeep Oberoi. The court said the central government had no clear stand in the matter. The court said there should be an inquiry into privacy violations. The court had on September 13 reserved its verdict on the case saying it only wanted to know whether the Centre used Pegasus software illegally for alleged spying on citizens.

The central government maintained that it was not a matter of public discussion nor was it in the interest of 'national security.' State that 15 petitions were filed for an impartial inquiry into the Pegasus espionage case. The petitions were filed by several people including senior journalist N Ram, MPs John Brittas and Yashwant Sinha.
