New Delhi: The top court has given permission to bring African Cheetah for Indian sanctuaries. The court has said that it is not against the ambitious project of bringing African cheetahs from Namibia to India and settling in Nauradehi Wildlife Sanctuary in Madhya Pradesh. The court said that there is no evidence of a collision between tiger and leopard.

It is noteworthy that leopards are no longer in the country. The cheetah was last seen in the jungles of Surguja in 1948. Now the Modi government is engaged in efforts to restore this species. In the year 2010, the Center asked the Madhya Pradesh government to prepare a sanctuary for the cheetah. The Forest Department had earlier proposed the Kuno Palpur Sanctuary for the Cheetah project, but the top court stopped it from doing so. Because Kuno Palpur Sanctuary has been prepared for Asiatic Lion (Babbar Lion). After this, the department started preparing Nauradehi for the cheetah.

The Wildlife Institute of India Dehradun had chosen Kuno Palpur and Nauradehi Sanctuary for this project. Both the sanctuaries have long open grasslands. To hunt the leopard requires small wildlife and an area with long and open ground. They need grass to hide. The department has fulfilled this requirement by removing ten villages from Nauradehi.
