New Delhi: The country's highest court has adjourned the hearing till 20 August on the petition of fugitive businessman Vijay Mallya on Thursday. The hearing of the case has been deferred because a document was not present in the records. Mallya has requested to reconsider the 2017 verdict of the court convicted of contempt of court for transferring $ 40 million to her children's accounts.
A bench of Justices UU Lalit and Ashok Bhushan heard the matter through video conference. He postponed the hearing of the case because a document was not available on record. The Supreme Court in June directed its registry to explain why Mallya's reconsideration petition was not listed before the court concerned for the last three years. The court registry was instructed to provide all the information including the names of the officers who handled the file related to the reconsideration petition in the last three years.
Fugitive businessman Mallya had filed a petition seeking reconsideration of the Supreme Court order dated 9 May 2017, which held him guilty of contempt of court for violating the order and transferring $ 400 million to his children's account. Mallya, a fraudster of Rs 9,000 crore with the bank, is currently living in the UK.
