Supreme Court postponed plea of Bengal govt against CBI probe in Bengal violence

Kolkata: A petition filed by the Mamata government in Bengal against CBI investigating cases of violence that erupted after the Assembly elections in West Bengal was heard in the Supreme court on Monday. The Supreme Court has adjourned the hearing of the case till October 22. The Supreme court has adjourned the hearing on a petition filed by the state government challenging the high court's order to hand over the CBI to investigate the post-election violence.

The Mamata government had alleged that CBI was pursuing investigations into post-election violence cases in the state without its permission which is illegal. The post-election violence in Bengal is being investigated by the CBI following the high court order. A total of 8 charge sheets have been filed in the case so far. A total of 37 FIR have been recorded so far in post-election violence cases. Mamata Banerjee's government had filed a petition in the Supreme court seeking a stay on the probe CBI.

The Bengal government had said that CBI was unilaterally investigating the case. The state government has appealed on the orders of the Calcutta High Court to stay the investigation of the primary cases registered by the CBI in post-election violence cases.
