New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Thursday lauded the Centre's move to grant ex-gratia to the next of kin of those who died of coronavirus and said judicial cognizance has to be taken of the fact that no other country has been able to do what India has done. The Supreme Court said, "We are happy that something has been done to wipe the tears of many families.''

On behalf of the Central Government, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta said, "We cannot compensate for the damage caused to life, but what the country can do for the families of the victims is being done. A bench of Justices MR Shah and AS Bopanna, while looking into the two affidavits filed by the Centre, said it will issue the order on October 4 with some directions. The bench indicated that in case of any dispute in issuing a death certificate, grievance redressal committees at the district level can be authorized to order the hospital records of the deceased.''

The court said, "We are happy that the victims will get some consolation. It will wipe away the tears of many families. We must take judicial cognizance of the fact that something is being done even after a lot of difficulties of the people. No other country has been able to do what India has done.'' The Supreme Court said this while hearing petitions filed by advocate Gaurav Kumar Bansal and some people who lost their family members due to coronavirus.
