New Delhi: The largest court in the country has sentenced lawyer Prashant Bhushan to pay a fine of one rupee after being found guilty in a contempt case. In case of non-payment of fine, he can be sentenced to imprisonment for three months and the practice of law can be stayed for up to three years.
The Supreme Court, while delivering its order on Monday, said that the decision of the court cannot be influenced by any publication or views in the media. The court has said that Prashant Bhushan's statements to the media were going to affect the proceedings even before the court's verdict. The Supreme Court held two tweets of Prashant Bhushan responsible for contempt of court. The court also said in its order that the press conference of four judges of the top court held in January 2018 was also incorrect.
Judges are not expected to hold press talks. The apex court said that there is freedom of expression, but the rights of others should also be respected. Taking Suo Motu cognizance of Bhushan's tweets, the court reserved its verdict for criticizing Chief Justice of India S.A. and the apex court.
