New Delhi: Senior Congress leader and Lok Sabha MP Shashi Tharoor and six other journalists have got relief from the Supreme Court at present. The top court has prohibited arrest by any agency in cases related to their tweet on the tractor rally violence taken out on Republic Day. The court said that the case will be heard again after two weeks. The arrest will continue to be banned until the next sunrise.

A three-judge bench of Chief Justice SA Bobde, Justice AS Bopanna, and Justice V Ramasubramanian heard the matter. In the petition filed on behalf of Shashi Tharoor MP, journalists Rajdeep Sardesai, Vinod K Jose, Mrinal Pande, Zafar Agha, Anant Nath, Paresh Nath, and the police case against them were sought to be abolished. Accusing them of misleading tweets on the death of a farmer during a tractor rally on 26 January in the country's capital Delhi, all of them were booked in various sections including sedition. FIRs have been registered against them in five states.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing on behalf of Delhi Police during Sunavai, opposed any relief. Mehta told the court that "these tweets had a terrible impact on Republic Day". At the same time, senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for Tharoor, demanded a stay on the arrest, saying that Tharoor is in Delhi and agencies can arrest him.
