Ahmedabad: Senior Congress leader Hardik Patel in Gujarat has been given major relief by the Supreme Court ahead of the upcoming assembly elections. In fact, the top court stayed the sentence of Congress leader Hardik Patel till the appeals in the riots and arson during the Patidar quota agitation were decided, saying the high court concerned should have stayed the sentence. After this decision of the apex court, Hardik Patel will now be able to contest the Assembly elections in Gujarat.

After the verdict, when the media questioned Hardik Patel whether he would contest elections after a stay on the sentence, he said, "Yes, why not?"  Let us tell you that Hardik Patel was convicted by the Gujarat High Court in the case of violence during the Patidar agitation and according to Indian law, no guilty person can contest elections till then. Until he is proved guilty. Hardik had then approached the Supreme Court and requested for a hearing at the earliest, citing the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Now, before the elections, the Supreme Court has given a big relief to Hardik Patel.

Let us tell you that even though Hardik Patel is expressing his desire to contest the elections, but there are still more obstacles in his way. The top court has put against Hardik only in the Visnagar case, but in Gujarat, 8 more cases of meeting without permission and spoiling the atmosphere in different cities are also registered against Hardik Patel. In such a situation, if the court sentences Hardik in a single case before the assembly elections, then his dream of contesting the election will remain a dream.
