New Delhi: The apex court has granted permission to the Uttarakhand government till May 2021 to remove 4 religious places (Dharamshalas) in Dharmanagri Haridwar. The Akhara Council had reached the Supreme Court against the ongoing anti-encroachment campaign on the orders of the High Court. The state government also demanded an interim ban on the removal of 4 dharmasthals in Haridwar because of the Kumbh Mela organized between March and April next year.

The Uttarakhand High Court is hearing on the issue of removing illegal religious places in the state on its own. The High Court has made the basis of the decision of the top court in 2009. The Supreme Court directed all the state governments to take action on the religious places built on the encroachment of government land.

After the intervention of the High Court, the action is going on in illegal shrines all over Uttarakhand. The Sant Samaj of Haridwar was opposing the removal of 4 temples built in the Bairagi Camp area. During the last Kumbh held in 2010, this permanent construction has been done on the site found for temporary construction. There is a demand for not removing it, citing the Kumbh to be held in 2021.
