SC Collegium recommends Akil Qureshi to be Chief Justice of Tripura High Court

Agartala: The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the appointment of Senior Judge of Gujarat High Court Akil Qureshi as Chief Justice of Tripura High Court instead of Madhya Pradesh. Earlier the collegium had decided to promote Justice Akil Qureshi to be the Chief Justice of Madhya Pradesh High Court.

According to the Daily News, a bench of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi, Justice SA Bobde and Justice S Abdul Nazeer had said that the decision of the collegium would be uploaded on the Supreme Court website soon, but the Law Ministry with legal and technical objections file was returned to the collegium for reconsideration. However, the government will no longer object to this decision of the collegium and the recommendation will be approved next week.

A team of lawyers from the Gujarat High Court had also filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking the appointment of Judge Akil Qureshi as the Chief Justice. The reason for the petition was that along with Judge Qureshi, the other judges who were to be appointed in different high courts have already been appointed. Only the matter of appointment of Judge Qureshi was pending.
