NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court of India has recommended the appointment of chief justices for seven high courts across the country. The collegium, led by Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud and comprising justices Sanjiv Khanna and B R Gavai, made these recommendations based on the seniority and performance of judges from various high courts, aiming to ensure equitable representation.
Justice Manmohan, currently the acting Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court, has been proposed as the chief justice of the court. He was appointed as a judge of the Delhi High Court on March 13, 2008, and ranks third in the All India Seniority list of High Court Judges. According to the collegium's resolution, Justice Manmohan is eligible to assume the role of Chief Justice of his parent high court, and thus, the collegium recommends his appointment to the position.
Additionally, Justice Rajiv Shakdher has been recommended for the position of chief justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court. With the impending transfer of Chief Justice M S Ramachandra Rao to Jharkhand High Court upon the retirement of Dr Justice Bidyut Ranjan Sarangi, a vacancy will arise in the Himachal Pradesh High Court. Justice Shakdher, appointed as a judge on April 11, 2008, and holding the fourth position in the All India Seniority list, is considered one of the senior-most judges in the country. The collegium has thus proposed his appointment to fill the upcoming vacancy in Himachal Pradesh.
These recommendations underscore the Supreme Court's commitment to maintaining effective judicial leadership across various high courts, ensuring continuity and efficiency in the administration of justice nationwide.
