New Delhi: The Supreme Court has refused to hear the plea of 14 ineligible rebel MLAs from Karnataka at the earliest. In fact, the then Karnataka Assembly Speaker KR Ramesh had disqualified 14 rebel MLAs after which they had filed a petition challenging the speaker's decision in the apex court. The court has now refused to hear the case soon.

In his petition, the legislators had termed the July 28 order of the Speaker as completely unconstitutional. In the petition, the legislators had said that his resignation was voluntary. It is worth mentioning here that the state-led Kumaraswamy government collapsed 14 months after the resignation of 17 Congress and JDS MLAs in Karnataka last month. Kumaraswamy had failed to prove the majority during the trust vote. That led to his loss of power.

The Congress party had accused all rebel MLAs of indulging in anti-party activities. In fact, 17 Congress MLAs had resigned from the party in a revolt, after which the Congress party had demanded action against all these MLAs under the anti-defection law. Ramesh, the then Assembly Speaker, had disqualified the tenure of 14 rebel MLAs in the current Assembly in Karnataka.
