Chennai: The Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court has given its verdict on allowing traditional sports like Jallikattu (bull taming) in Tamil Nadu, Kambala (buffalo race) in Karnataka and bullock cart race in Maharashtra. In its decision, the apex court has declared the amendment made in the law as valid. The court has said in its decision that the amendments made in this regard by the three states are valid.

Along with this, the Supreme Court has described these games as related to culture and not cruelty. The constitution bench of five judges has considered the game related to animals as a cultural heritage in all the three states. The petitioners challenged the validity of state laws allowing these games. It was claimed in the petition that there is cruelty to animals in these games. Let us tell you that in 2014, the apex court had declared it illegal. However, the states had made changes after the decision of the apex court. At the same time, rejecting the petition challenging the amendment in the law, the court has refused to interfere in it. The court says that Jallikattu is a cultural activity of Tamil Nadu, so the court will not interfere in it.

The Supreme Court in its judgment has recognized traditional sports like Jallikattu (bull taming) in Tamil Nadu, Kambala (buffalo race) in Karnataka and bullock cart race in Maharashtra as cultural heritage. With this, it has been said that the amendment made by Tamil Nadu does not violate Article 15A. Let us tell you, the constitution bench had to decide whether the states have the “legislative competence” to make such laws, in which Jallikattu and bullock cart races come under cultural rights under Article 29(1) and constitutionally can be protected.
