Major setback to Asaram from Supreme court, Supreme Court rejects bail plea again

New Delhi: The Supreme Court has once again refused to grant bail to Asaram in the Surat rape case. The apex court also asked the trial court to complete the trial at the earliest. On the other hand, the Gujarat government has told the Supreme Court that 10 witnesses are yet to be recorded in the ongoing rape case against Asaram in Surat. The apex court asked the trial court to dispose of the case without being influenced by the High Court's observation.

It may be mentioned that Asaram has been in jail for more than four years in Jodhpur Central Jail. Asaram was convicted of raping a minor girl. A Jodhpur court had sentenced him to life imprisonment on April 25 after he was found guilty of raping a teenager at Asaram's Ashram five years ago.

Asaram was accused of raping a minor in Shahjahanpur district of UP, in which he was convicted. The girl was studying at Asaram's ashram in Chhindwara district of Madhya Pradesh. The victim alleged that Asaram had called her at The Mani Ashram near Jodhpur and raped her on August 15, 2013. Asaram has denied these allegations.
