New Delhi: The country's largest court has admitted that it is also responsible to some extent for increasing the burden of lawsuits. The court said that when we allow a party to give written assurances, in most cases contempt petitions are filed thereafter. Thus, there are hundreds of contempt petitions pending before us. A bench of Justice DY Chandrachud said that in fact, we are increasing the cases in the apex court.

A bench of Justice Chandrachud and MR Shah was considering a special leave petition against the Karnataka High Court orders dismissing the revision petition against the order to vacate the house. This decision was then filed for reconsideration and accepted the special request for additional time to vacate the petitioner-tenant. But in this case again, while filing the petition, time was sought to vacate.

The bench said that sometimes we extend the time to vacate the house for six months or a year. But these are cases which are pending in the lower courts for 15 years and even for two decades. Why should we extend this time further? The bench said that where a party gives written assurance to vacate the premises within a specific period in compliance with the court order.
