SC: Centre and NGO seek response over Chardham project

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday asked the Centre and an NGO  to suggest additional security measures for which it can entrust the responsibility of implementing the ambitious Chardham project to the implementing agencies in the event of sanctioning a project worth thousands of crores of rupees for the country's defence needs.

The Supreme Court said that instead of saying that additional safeguards should be taken, it would like to lay down the conditions in the court's order that the implementing agencies of the project will have to comply with. The Central Government has said that it has already done various researches, including geological surveys of areas and several steps have been taken to reduce landslide incidents. However, the Centre also said it would not mind if the Supreme Court takes additional security measures. The strategically important 900 km-long project, which is being built at a cost of Rs 12,000 crore, aims to provide all-weather connectivity to the four holy shrines of Uttarakhand - Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath.

A bench of Justices DY Chandrachud, Suryakant and Vikram Nath clarified that it has not cast its vote on the dispute. She also said that the questions she is asking are to get a better response from the parties concerned in the matter. On the other hand, in the case of road width enhancement, Justice D Y Chandrachud said in the apex court that it is not a matter of army versus environment. The lives of the Army and civilians are associated with the areas of high altitude. The army and its inhabitants are closely associated with Zanskar, 12 km above Kargil, and the service delivers food items in unusual conditions.
