New Delhi: The apex court has issued a notice to the Jammu and Kashmir government on the demand for 4G speed in mobile internet in Jammu and Kashmir during a 21-day lockdown implemented across the country to prevent the spread of global pandemic coronavirus infection. The Supreme Court has sought a reply from Jammu and Kashmir in a week.

An NGO petition stated that better connectivity is necessary for information transactions during lockdown. Children will also be able to study school through video conferencing. This PIL has been filed challenging the government's order, according to which the internet speed in mobile data services has been limited to 2G. The petitioner has requested that in this hour of health crisis the government is under obligation to ensure access to "digital infrastructure" in order to give effect to citizens' right to health.

Corona: Odisha extends lockdown till April 30

In August 2019, the repeal of Article 370 in the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir had also banned the internet. Five months later, in January 2020, the Supreme Court called the Internet shutdown illegal, after which the Internet was partially restored at a speed of just 2G for mobile users.
