'Supreme' verdict on Sabarimala, case sent to constitution bench

New Delhi: The Supreme Court has given the matter to the big constitutional bench while giving a decision on the reconsideration petitions in the Sabarimala temple case. The 5-member bench of the apex court, with a majority of 3: 2, has referred the case to a larger member i.e. seven-member constitutional bench. Now the constitution bench of 7 judges will hear the matter.

However, there is no restriction on the old decision of the five judges. The entry of women of any age is not prohibited in the temple. Chief Justice Gogoi has said that the petitioners want to revive the debate about what is an integral part of religion? The apex court has said that women's entry into places of worship is not limited to the temple alone.

The issue of women's entry is also included in mosques. Out of the 5-judge bench, Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi, Justice J Khanwilkar and Justice Indu Malhotra ruled to refer the matter to the larger bench. Justice Nariman and Justice Chandrachud have expressed disagreement with this.

Earlier, the Supreme Court had reserved the judgment on 6 February 2019 after hearing in the open court on the review petition. The apex court in its order dated 28 September 2018, allowed girls and women of all ages to enter the Sabarimala temple. A review petition was filed against this in the Supreme Court.
