New Delhi: The apex court on Monday heard a demand for compensation to the families of those who lost their lives due to the global epidemic Corona virus. Meanwhile, the court said it was clear that the 2015 notification was not applicable here, so it could not be insisted that Rs 4 lakh be provided, as the epidemic norm swelled, it would be a huge economic liability.

Earlier, the Central Government had also filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court. It said that the families of those who lost their lives from corona cannot be compensated for Rs 4 lakh each. The Centre told the apex court that mandatory compensation under the disaster law applies only to natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods, etc. The government argues that if compensation is paid for death from one disease and not on the other, it would be wrong.

On the other hand, the petitioner's counsel said that when the state governments can announce compensation, why can't the central government provide compensation in case of corona death. Petitioner Gaurav Bansal said the central government cannot say it will not pay compensation. The Finance Commission is also aware that people need money. If a person dies in backward areas, his family is in financial trouble.
