New Delhi: The Supreme court is scheduled to pronounce its verdict today in the maratha reservation case in admissions and jobs in medical colleges. A constitutional bench headed by Justice Ashok Bhushan will pronounce its verdict on the petition filed against maratha reservation. The constitution bench of the Supreme court comprises Justice L Nageshwar Rao, Justice S Abdul Nazir, Justice Hemant Gupta and Justice S Ravindra Bhatt besides Justice Ashok Bhushan.

During the long hearing on the issue, it was also discussed whether the historic Indra Sahni verdict of 1992 (popularly known as the Mandal verdict) also needs to be reconsidered by a larger bench. The Supreme Court had said it proposes to consider issues, including whether the verdict in the Indra Sahni case needs to be revisited by a larger bench in view of constitutional amendments, decisions and changed social equations.

The High Court, while upholding the law in June 2019, held that 16 per cent reservation was not fair and that quota employment should not have more than 12 per cent reservation and admission should not exceed 13 per cent. The same decision has been challenged in the Supreme Court.
