New Delhi: The Supreme Court has taken cognizance of the case amid protests against the ongoing felling of trees in Aarey Colony, Mumbai. The apex court has said to hear the letter written by law students protesting against the cutting of trees, as a public interest litigation. The court has also set up a special bench for hearing today.

On Sunday morning, a delegation of law students wrote a letter to the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Ranjan Gogoi and requested to take cognizance of the case. For the past several days, environmentalists and activists have been protesting against the felling of hundreds of trees for the Metro shed. The top court will decide after the hearing today whether the cutting of trees will be stopped or not. In fact, some law students wrote a letter to the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Ranjan Gogoi on Sunday. In the letter, information was given about the action of the police on the protesting people in Aarey Colony. Students wanted to meet CJI on Sunday but CJI was not in Delhi on Sunday.

Let us tell you that trees are being cut to make Mumbai Metro's rake depot. The Bombay High Court on Friday dismissed the petitions challenging the Mumbai Municipal Corporation's order to cut trees. The High Court on Saturday refused to ban the cutting of trees.
