Supreme Court to hear today on increasing incidents of rape of children

New Delhi: The Supreme Court will hear the cases of increasing child rape in the country today. The bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi will hear the case. In fact, on July 12, the Supreme Court had taken cognizance of the matter and appointed senior counsel V Giri as the judge. Court has sought suggestions from Giri on passing the necessary guidelines.

It may be mentioned that from January 1 to June 30, 2019, there were a total of 24,212 incidents of rape from children in the country in which FIR has been reported. The court has decided to lay down guidelines for mobilizing infrastructural resources and other measures to deal with such cases. In the last hearing, the top court had said that the incidents and figures of rape from children depicted in various newspapers and online publications have made them nervous and concerned. The court then sought data from all states and the high court on child rape cases.

The court reported the data collected which is shocking. The court had appointed senior advocate V Giri as a jurist and asked the states to give their suggestions on how to deal with such cases, such as mobilizing infrastructural resources, recording video of proceedings. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, who was present in the court, also expressed concern over the matter and said that the government is also sensitive to these cases and will cooperate fully with the court in hearing the case.
