New Delhi: The Supreme Court is likely to hear the Karnataka hijab dispute next week. In March, a petition was filed in the apex court challenging the Karnataka High Court's verdict in which the high court had categorically refused to lift the ban on hijab in school colleges. Now, advocate Prashant Bhushan has told the Supreme Court that the petition was filed in the month of March, but so far it has not been heard. The court said the matter will come up for hearing next week.

It is worth mentioning that the hijab case in Karnataka started in January. Here in a government college in Udupi, six girl students suddenly reached the college wearing hijabs. But the college administration had prevented the girl students from entering the class wearing hijabs. After this, the girls lodged a protest against the college administration while holding a press conference. After this, there was a dispute about the hijab from Karnataka to the whole country. Demonstrations in support and protest against the hijab were also seen in schools. In such a situation, some girl students had moved to the High Court seeking permission to wear hijab in school colleges.

A three-member full bench of Karnataka High Court Chief Justice Rituraj Awasthi, Justice Krishna S Dixit and Justice JM Kazi had on March 15 dismissed the petition filed by Muslim girl students. The High Court in its judgment had said that the hijab is not a part of the compulsory practice of Islam. Petitions have been filed in the Supreme Court against this decision of the High Court. However, then the court refused to hear the matter immediately.
