New Delhi: Petitions are constantly being filed in the apex court over the violence that erupted in West Bengal after the election results came out. A new petition claims that more than 1 million people have had to flee home due to the violence. The petition was placed before a vacation bench of the court today. The judges assured to hear the petition next week.

The petition, filed on behalf of 5 petitioners, including social activist Arun Mukherjee, said that the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) people in the state are constantly attacking opposition supporters. 19 people have been killed. A large number of people are injured. Apart from the offices of the opposition party, the property of ordinary citizens is also being damaged. Sexual violence is taking place with women. But the police remain mute spectators.

The petition also said that the administration has completely failed to provide security to the people. On the contrary, they are being pressured not to file an FIR for what happened to them. The serious incidents before the police are also being investigated. The petitioners demand that the Supreme Court constitute a SIT to investigate the violence. The court should ask the state government to discharge its duty of internal security under Article 355 of the Constitution. A special helpline should be set up to help the victims of violence, which is controlled by the Central Paramilitary Forces.
