New Delhi: On Tuesday, the Supreme Court agreed to hear the Karnataka government's appeal of a high court decision ordering the State Election Commission (SEC) to hold elections in 198 wards of the 'Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike' (BBMP).

The civic body's five-year term expired in September last year, and the poll process had been stayed, according to a bench consisting of Chief Justice N V Ramana, Justices Surya Kant and Hima Kohli. "Please send the file to my office. At 1 p.m., we'll see "When advocate Nizam Pasha said that a bench led by then-CJI S A Bobde had stayed the high court's December 4, 2020 verdict, ordering the SEC to hold the election within six weeks, the CJI said.

The state government had appealed to the Supreme Court against a high court order that ordered the BBMP elections to be held in accordance with a delimitation notification issued on September 23, 2020, rather than the 243 seats specified in the Karnataka Municipal Corporation Third Amendment Act (2020). The government claimed that the high court decision overturned the unanimous will of the state legislature, which had amended the Karnataka Municipal Corporations Act of 1976 to increase the number of wards in Bengaluru to 243.
