New Delhi: The Supreme Court will hear a plea seeking a probe into cases of tarnishing the image of Islam's originator Prophet Mohammed. On Monday, the court posted the hearing on such a petition on May 9. The plea has demanded that cases of indecent remarks and hate crimes against Prophet Mohammad should be investigated under the supervision of a court and then the accused should be booked. The petition said that there have been cases in various parts of the country when comments have been made that tarnish the image of Prophet Mohammed. Due to this, the faith of the people who believe in Islam has been hurt.

Justice A M Khanwikkalkar said the matter will come up for hearing on May 9. Other such petitions will also be considered on the same day. The petition was filed by Jamiat-Ulema-e-Hind president Maulana Syed Mahmood Asad Madani. He said the Supreme Court should order the Central government to take action in hate speech cases. He said that there have been many cases when Prophet Mohammed was despised. He said that attacking the prophet Mohammad is like attacking Islam in a way.

The petition said the kind of criticisms that have been made are far more than having differences with one's faith. It's a kind of hate crime. The Central Government and the State Governments should take action on this. Madani, in his application, said such comments are going to harm the secular character of the country.
