Baba Deep Singh Ji was born on January 26, 1682, and he passed away at the age of roughly 75 while fighting in Amritsar on November 13, 1757. He grew up near Guru Gobind Singh Ji, the tenth Guru, starting at about the age of 12. He was a tall, powerful Sikh who exhibited amazing bravery.

He was a valiant and brave saint-soldier who was always willing to put his life in danger for the Panth. Baba Ji was a Sikh who belonged to the Rangreta dynasty.

Ahmad Shah Durrani occupied Punjab during this invasion of India and made his son Taimur Shah Viceroy of Lahore, with the seasoned general Jahan Khan serving as his deputy. Invading Amritsar in May 1757, Jahan Khan destroyed the Sikh stronghold of Ram Rauni and tainted the holy pool. Baba Deep Singh Ji was 75 years old, but he still possessed a youthful warrior's strength. He gathered a sizable contingent of Sikhs and moved in the direction of Sri Harimander Sahib. Their numbers had increased to almost 5,000 by the time they arrived in the Tarn Taran area, which is located around ten miles from Amritsar. Baba Ji requested all who were within this line he had drawn on the ground with his khanda at this moment and asked who are willing to fight and die to cross the line.

Jahan Khan assembled a 20,000-man army as soon as he learned of Baba Deep Singh Ji's plans and headed toward Tarn Taran. Five miles outside of Amritsar, close to the village of Goharwal, Baba Deep Singh Ji's army caught up with Jahan Khan's troops. The opposing forces began to collide at this point. With his double-edged khanda, which weighed 15 kg (32 lbs), Baba Deep Singh Ji engaged in combat. Each Sikh fought with such bravery and valor that the opposition was almost overcome. Jahan Khan's troops received a sizable army of reinforcements in the middle of the battle, turning the tide against the Sikhs. However, the Sikhs continued to battle and moved closer to Amritsar under the leadership of Baba Deep Singh Ji.

Jamal Khan, one of the Mughal commanders, attacked Baba Deep Singh Ji during the battle. Both men swung their weapons violently during the fight, separating their heads from their bodies. A young Sikh warrior yelled out to Baba Ji after viewing this spectacle, reminding him of his promise to find Sri Harimander Sahib. Upon hearing this, Baba Deep Singh Ji rose right away while holding his khanda in his right hand and his severed head in his left palm. He then carried on battling and moved in the direction of Sri Harimander Sahib with the strength gained from reciting JapJi Sahib. The majority of the warriors in the Mughal army panicked when they saw Baba Deep Singh's headless body dashing through their ranks.

Baba Deep Singh was able to continue fighting and fulfilled his oath on finally reached Sri Harimander Sahib there he bowed and lay his head on the parkarma (rectangular walkway) of this sacred Gurudwara The Sikh Army continued to fight the fleeing Mughals until victory was achieved. Baba Deep Singh ji is remembered by all Sikhs as a brave martyr with an unflinching dedication to Sikh principles.

The Harimander Sahib martyr is today honored at two different shrines: Shahidganj Baba Deep Singh Shahid, close to Gurdwara Ramsar, and one on the terrace of the Sarovar around the Harimander Sahib, where he eventually fell. Gurdwaras in Punjab serve as markers for the locations where Baba ji drew the line, engaged in combat, lost his head, hurled it, and where it landed. The Sikhs were inspired to fight against the authoritarian and repressive Mughal Empire by Baba Deep Singh Ji's deeds for a very long time. His life continues to serve as a model for all Sikhs of how to live and die with honor.
