After 20 students lost their lives in a massive fire in a coaching centre in Gujarat, the person running the centre has been arrested by the police. Gujarat Chief Secretary JN Singh on Sunday said that the person who was running the coaching centre, known to be one Bhargav Butani as per earlier reports, has been arrested and around 1123 coaching centres in the city have been issued show-cause notice over fire-safety compliance.

“As an immediate step, the person running the coaching centre has been arrested and two officials in the Surat Fire Department have been suspended for negligence... The government will soon conduct a meeting on steps to be taken in the future,” Singh said.

“In Surat, 1123 coaching centres have been served show cause notice and they have been given three days for complying with fire safety standards. We are working on overhauling fire safety infrastructure and making it better all over Gujarat,” news agency ANI quoted Singh as saying.

After the Surat incident, the Gujarat government conducted preliminary inspection and issued showcause notice to 9,395 buildings all over the state in the past two days. Those who have been issued showcause notice need to reply within three days, the chief secretary said.

Sixteen of the students who died in the fire on Friday were girls as over a dozen students jumped off the third and fourth floors of the Takshashila Arcade in order to escape the blaze. Three of the students fell to death. According to reports, most students died due to suffocation, while others died due to injuries suffered due to jumping off the window to escape the fire.
