New Delhi: Election Commissioner Sushil Chandra appointed as next Chief Election Commissioner (CEC). According to a statement issued by the Legislative Department of the Ministry, Chandra has taken over today, he will be relieved on May 14, 2022. Sunil Arora's term as Chief Election Commissioner has come to an end.
The notification said that in the light of clause (two) of Section 324 of the Constitution, the President has appointed Sushil Chandra as the Chief Election Commissioner with effect from 13th April 2021. Chandra was appointed election commissioner before the Lok Sabha elections. During Chandra's tenure, the Election Commission will conduct assembly elections in Goa, Manipur, Uttarakhand, Punjab, and Uttar Pradesh. The term stake disputing the assemblies of Goa, Manipur, Uttarakhand, and Punjab will end on different dates in March next year. The term of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly ends on May 14 next year.
Chandra was the Chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes before serving in the Election Commission. One post is lying vacant in the three-member commission after Arora's retirement. Chandra will be the chief election commissioner from Tuesday while Rajiv Kumar is the election commissioner. Chandra, who has done b-tech from IIT, is a 1980 batch officer of the Indian Revenue Service (Income Tax Cadre). Before Chandra, TS Krishnamurthy was an IRS officer who was appointed as election commissioner. Krishnamurthy became chief election commissioner in 2004.
