New Delhi: Increased prices of onions are often made of headlines. It posses a great impact on politics also. In fact, the then Delhi BJP Government had to lose power in the state due to high prices of onion and price rise in Delhi. This Government was led by Sushma Swaraj. In 1993, the BJP came to power in Delhi for the first time with an absolute majority and the party's veteran leader Madan Lal Khurana became the chief minister.

After 2 years 86 days, Saheb Singh Verma was replaced by Madan Lal Khurana in 1996 as the Chief Minister of Delhi. Just a few months before the assembly elections, the BJP made Kadawar woman leader Sushma Swaraj the CM. On the other hand, the Congress party handed over the command of the Delhi Pradesh Congress to Sheila Dikshit ahead of the polls. While Sheila activated the Congress organisation in Delhi, she established herself as an alternative to Sushma Swaraj.

This led to the 1998 election of Sheila Dikshit versus Sushma Swaraj. Both were veteran leaders. Sheila Dikshit's magic on Sushma Swaraj was overwhelming in this election. The price of onion, the price rise, led to the BJP stopping at only 15 seats. Sushma was shocked at the law and order situation in Delhi. She often sat in the car of the Delhi Police and roamed the streets at night. She believed that the girls in the capital must be safe.
