Kolkata, SUV ran over the people when they were sleeping on footpath in the Maniktala area in the northern part of the city in which 60-year-old man was killed and five others injured.

According to police officer, the incident took place around 1.30 am on Maniktala Main Road near CIT Park here when the six persons, mainly vegetable vendors, were sleeping on the footpath.

The driver of the SUV lost control over the vehicle and it ran over the sleeping persons after mounting the pavement, a Kolkata Police officer said.

The driver of the vehicle has been arrested.

Asked whether the driver was drunk, the officer said, "We are waiting for the medical report of the person concerned.

Ali Hussain Sardar succumbed to his injuries and four persons were discharged after treatment, Esak Mondal 50 is undergoing treatment at RG Kar Medical College.
