According to specialists at Lucknow's King George's Medical University (KGMU), swelling around the eyes and legs, anaemia, and periodic headaches and vomiting all be early warning signs of chronic kidney disease (CKD).

"Chronic kidney disease is difficult to diagnose in its early stages due of its veiled symptoms," said Prof Vishvajeet Singh, the acting head of the nephrology department. Nearly 60 percent of the patients are in the latter stages of their illness. The only options left at that point are dialysis or organ transplant." He advised them to see a nephrologist if they saw edoema in their limbs (particularly their eyes and legs), low hemoglobin, periodic headaches, or vomiting, especially if they also had hypertension or diabetes.

"Medicines can manage a patient's condition if it is discovered early," Prof Singh said.

"Chronic kidney disease rates are increasing over time since every third person in India has hypertension," said nephrologist Dr Lakshya Kumar. More than 60 percent of these people are unaware that they have it. Only half of those who know end up taking their medications. As a result of the increased blood pressure, the kidneys' tiny blood capillaries are destroyed." Dr Kumar noted that patients can avoid chronic kidney disease by eating a nutritious diet, managing stress, and exercising regularly.
