In the last league match of the Group-E, Switzerland took the 2-2 draw from Costa Rica to make it to the pre-quarterfinals. Joel Campbell of Costa Rica was shown yellow card due to elbowing Switzerland's manual arm in the 29th minute of the game. Two minutes later, Switzerland opened its account by a goal. Blerim Dzemaili passed the eighth delivery from Costa Rica to the goalkeeper in the goal post and made Switzerland ahead by 1-0.

Though Costa Rica began to show their strategy when the second half began. In the 56th minute of the game, Kendall Watson scored the goal of equalizing Costa Rica. However, two minutes before the end of the scheduled time, Switzerland made a significant 2-1 lead, thanks to Josip Derrick's goal. When the match was going on in time, the match suddenly changed the way.

Costa Rica got a penalty because of the fall of Campbell. The Penalty kick taken by Brian Ruiz of Costa Rica collided with the ball bar and switched to Switzerland's goalkeeper Somer's back and went into the round post. Due to this unwanted suicide goal, the match ended with a 2-2 draw. Switzerland will now face Sweden in the last-16. In the 2010 World Cup, Switzerland was out of the stage but in 2014, it made in the last 16.
