Taika Waititi to produce ‘Frybread Face and Me’

Oscar-winning writer and director Taika Waititi has come on board as executive producer on “Frybread Face and Me”.  It is one of the ten projects selected as part of 2020 Sundance Institute Directors and Screenwriters Labs.
According to the reprort, the film revolves around two adolescent Navajo (Native American) cousins from different worlds who bond during a summer stay at their grandmother’s ranch in Arizona. According to Variety, the film  Written and directed by Native American filmmaker Billy Luther, is semi-autobiographical and “City Boyz” star Chad Burris has also signed on to produce.

According to Luther, Waititi, who is in pre-production on “Thor: Love and Thunder” and the untitled “Star Wars” movie, read the script and immediately signed on. He is the first Maori to win an Oscar and in his speech said, “I dedicate this to all the Indigenous kids in the world who want to do art and dance and write stories.” He added, “We are the original storytellers and we can make it here, as well.”

Luther, best known for his award-winning documentary “Miss Navajo”, said Waititi chose to back the project soon after reading the script. Waititi is currently working on the fourth installment in Marvel Studios “Thor” franchise. The film, titled “Thor: Love and Thunder”, features Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman and Tessa Thompson.
