Dushanbe: Tajikistan, a nation bound by treaty alliance with Russia, is preparing to hold joint military exercises with the United States in September, even as the conflict in Ukraine continues to cast shadows over international relations.

Dubbed "Regional Cooperation 2023," these military drills are scheduled to take place from September 12 to 20 within Tajikistan's Khatlon province. The exercise will involve the participation of military units from the United States, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan.

These annual drills have a longstanding tradition aimed at enhancing the interoperability of the participating countries' armed forces. Simultaneously, they are perceived as a measure to deter potential acts of aggression from Russia and other regional actors.

This development unfolds at a time when Russia is deeply embroiled in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Tajikistan is a member of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), a military alliance predominantly under Russian leadership. The CSTO has unequivocally pledged to defend its member nations in the event of an attack.

Nevertheless, Tajikistan has also nurtured a close partnership with the United States over the years. The United States has provided military assistance to Tajikistan, and joint military exercises have been conducted between the two nations previously.

Tajikistan's decision to engage in joint drills with the United States underscores its strategic ambivalence. The country endeavors to maintain amicable relations with both Russia and the United States, and these drills serve as a clear statement that Tajikistan does not wish to take sides in the ongoing Ukrainian conflict.
